New minion type: Naga[]

Queen Azshara full
Destroyed by their thirst for power, and cursed for all eternity, the vengeful Naga are a new minion type coming with this expansion and becoming a permanent addition to Hearthstone. The Naga are a spell-focused minion type that tend to give bonuses for playing spells while the Naga are in your hand.[1]

New keyword: Colossal[]

Hydralodon full
The ocean floor is home to many massive monsters unlike anything you’ve seen before. These giant creatures are too big to fit on one card! Minions with the Colossal keyword come with extra appendages that synergize with their main body in powerful ways. These appendages are summoned with the main body, even if the Colossal minion wasn’t played from hand.[1]

New keyword: Dredge[]

Tuskarrrr Trawler full
Don’t you hate it when the one card you need is at the very bottom of your deck? Not any more! Dredge is a new keyword that lets you look at the bottom three cards of your deck and pick one to bubble up to the top of your deck. You can combine these Dredge cards with new Azsharan cards that send a powerful “Sunken” card to the bottom of your deck. Whether it’s sunken treasures, your cool new Legendary, or a well-timed damage spell, Dredge can help you get just what you need.[1]

Azsharan Treasures[]

Azsharan Treasures are cards that put a Sunken card on the bottom of your deck, which is a more powerful version of them. They represent the Zin-Azshari during its glory days.[2]

Description[]

Nazjatar is a dangerous and beautiful place, filled with coral forests and unfathomable deep-sea creatures skittering through passageways and clinging to rockfaces. Secrets that have remained submerged for millennia are now exposed to the surface world, including the ancient ruins of Zin-Azshari, the once-glorious capital of the kaldorei. Further in the depths, the beautiful and terrible city of the naga — and the palace of the Queen of Tides herself — awaits.

History and politics[]

Ruins of Zin-Azshari WoW

Ruins of Zin-Azshari.

The city was constructed following the events of the Great Sundering, when the remaining Highborne were transformed into naga. Under the direction of their ever-pragmatic Queen Azshara and Lady Vashj, they set about constructing a new capital beneath the waves of the Great Sea, where Zin-Azshari and the Well of Eternity were once located. Thus, Nazjatar was created, and Azshara knew that one day her empire under the sea would eclipse even that of the ancient night elves.

The naga of Nazjatar are masters of sorcery and natural dwellers of the ocean deeps. The naga reinforcements sent to Azuremyst Isle for Warlord Sriss'tiz came directly from Nazjatar.

While the Alliance struck a decisive blow to the Horde in the Battle of Dazar'alor, it was not without some casualties. With both sides reeling from the events and healing their wounds, the naga made their move and begin striking against the two. Taking any remaining ships, the Horde and the Alliance set sail and arrive in the ancient land of Nazjatar: the land of the naga and the location of Azshara's seat of power, her Eternal Palace, where they will face Queen Azshara herself.

Warchief Sylvanas Windrunner devised a plan to finally destroy the Alliance and end the war. For that outcome, she sent a fleet to the high seas from Zuldazar, led by Nathanos Blightcaller alongside Lor'themar Theron and First Arcanist Thalyssra. Sylvanas gave Nathanos the blade of Xal'atath to guide them to the rendezvous point. After finding out about it, the Alliance sent another fleet led by Lord Admiral Jaina Proudmoore alongside Genn Greymane and Shandris Feathermoon to chase them. It was at the rendezvous point that Queen Azshara used the Tidestone of Golganneth to open the seas making the two fleets wreck into the reefs of Nazjatar.

History[]

On March 7th, 2022, Blizzard revealed several upcoming announcements for the Warcraft franchise, including Hearthstone's next expansion and Core set to be revealed on March 15th.[3] However, on the 14th it was announced that the Hearthstone announcement was being moved to March 17th instead.[4]

On March 16th, the official Hearthstone twitter posted a short video of the porthole of a submarine passing by various locations, with the accompanying text "It's almost time to set sail, adventurers!"[5] Shortly afterwards, information about the expansion was mistakenly uploaded to Google Play a day early, revealing the expansion's name and pre-order hero.[6]

Trivia[]

  • Voyage to the Sunken City cinematic is the first trailer to feature neither a lyrical song nor narration, instead being electronic dance music.
  • Voyage to the Sunken City cinematic was made by Mooncolony.[7]
  • Among the first expansions of each year, Voyage to the Sunken City is the first to be announced before the year's theme is revealed.
  • The flavor text of Druid of the Reef (“Wow, there’s a whole sunken city down here!”) was an early reference to this expansion.
