Daily Clarification, 3 Wins a Quest?

50 wins are not required for the 60+ quests to appear; I got one today with 38 wins. It's possible the number is 30, or 25, or even 0 and they're just rare. I suggest anyone with a win total lower than the lowest one listed who receives one of these quests update this page.

Additionally, the "win 3 victories with any class" quest: is that a daily option? Either there is an identical hidden quest, or it's been changed so that this quest is now repeatable up to 10 times a day, and it rewards 10g (for a maximum of 100g a day from 30 victories). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.202.74.87 (talkcontribs) 21:02, 18 February 2014‎

Regarding the second point, yes, it is a daily quest. The 10 gold rewarded for each 3 victories (up to 100g/day) is quite separate, and only shown as you fulfil its criteria, rather than being allocated as your daily quest. -- Taohinton (talk) 22:31, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
Regarding the bigger quests, I've decided to go ahead and remove the paragraph for now. The info was originally posted by a single editor, who provided no reference and therefore likely decided the number based on their own experience in-game; since then we've had two editors who have had contradictory experiences, and searching online shows some claiming to have received the 100g quest immediately after the tutorial. Google also reveals a lot of discussion about why the higher gold quests are so rare. I therefore suspect it may simply be a matter of luck that players don't often see those quests come up until they've reached a reasonable level of wins.
If someone can provide a reference or proof of a win-threshold, I'll be happy to re-instate the note. -- Taohinton (talk) 22:46, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
Totally agree with your thoughts above. Unrelated: would it be reasonable to mention the "3 wins" repeatable sort-of-quest somewhere on this page? It seems relevant even if it's not technically a quest. It's still a major income source and it's worth mentioning the 100g/daily max (assuming that's true). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.202.74.87 (talkcontribs) 14:49, 28 February 2014‎
Yes, I agree - I've added information for it here. I'd been considering doing this, but hesitated since it isn't actually a quest. It still feels a bit odd, but it makes sense to put it here since some readers will likely look for it here, and play-wise it's a pretty similar device. -- Taohinton (talk) 19:12, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
I think it's important to mention that there likely is some threshold (http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/166852/how-do-i-unlock-60g-or-100g-quests) so that new players know to rather just play 40g missions until they get their first 60g/100g one so that they know they have been unlocked. --197.87.46.212 07:52, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
As per the above explanation, I can't see any solid evidence to support the notion that there is an unlock or threshold to the quests. Some players report getting them straight after the tutorial; others clearly don't get them for quite a while. If you consider the rate at which new players often complete games, it's not unreasonable to expect most players not to get those quests until they've reached a reasonable number of wins. As stated on the linked page, even "A 1/500 chance isn't that unlucky. When you consider the thousands of people who play this game, this is going to happen to someone." - and for 'thousands' read 'millions'. There's a natural tendency for people to try to find reason for chance, but in this case I can't see any evidence of such a mechanism. -- Taohinton (talk) 21:45, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
I see what you say, as some people among millions having this anecdotal experience is obviously very likely. The reason I believe it to be true is because among me and 3 friends (who all started playing a bit more than a week ago), all of us have only seen 40g quests even though we've also been trying the reroll strategy. I've also not read/heard of any cases where people got 60g/100g quests right after the tutorial, but if that's true, then maybe it has changed in the meantime? Maybe it was only for beta players? Anyway, I'll wait until our group starts getting the non-40g quests and then try to work out the odds. --197.87.46.212 05:44, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
I agree it is possible that things have been changed since those reports; always a possibility unfortunately, which makes it very hard to be certain of anything. What exactly do you mean by "the reroll strategy", and how much rerolling does it allow? -- Taohinton (talk) 22:55, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
By the "reroll strategy" I only mean rerolling all 40g quests and then not completing them until completely necessary (or when they are 60g/100g quests). Anyway, I few days after I posted that, each of us got a 60g within a day or two of each other. Maybe it just requires the account to be a week old, although it's tough to know cause we did play very actively so it could also be 50 wins, completing various quests or whatever other theories are floating around out there. Or maybe it's just a coincidence. --192.168.9.48 14:15, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

Unobtainable

Isn't it technically still possible to get the free Blizzcon card, assuming you can find an unused freebie card from the show? People are definitely selling them on eBay. It's really just not possible to get any more from Blizzard, and they aren't distributing more of them. Not sure how to word that, though, or if it's really even worth getting into. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.202.74.87 (talkcontribs) 19:43, 13 March 2014‎

I'm not sure. Apparently the card is gained by logging in when you've purchased a ticket; I'm not sure whether a code is supplied, or it's to do with registering it on your Battle.net account. If it's the latter, it's possible they won't accept new ticket registration at this time. I've tried to straddle the fence a little more in the section's wording. -- Taohinton (talk) 21:38, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
A code is supplied by Blizzard to redeem on a Battle.net account. This code is given by email to all physical ticket purchasers. When applied, the code gives all the Blizzcon digital goodies (that players get automatically with a virtual ticket with no code to apply) including the card back. The code also gives access to the Blizzcon live stream/VoDs for the following 2 weeks after Blizzcon just like the virtual ticket (in 2014 and 2015). The reason codes are supplied for physical tickets is because a person can buy multiple tickets but physical tickets can change hands due to last minute arrangements, and the ticket purchase guide even says to put all tickets under the purchaser's account if the attendees could not be verified to go at the time of purchase. - Xinhuan (talk) 04:19, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Question

Question about the "Got the Basics!" and "One of Everything!" quests requiring that you have every nongold/gold card in the game - is it necessary to have two of every non-legendary card or is it enough to have at least 1 of every card? 69.159.174.4 13:48, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

For "Got the Basics!" it's not possible to collect basic cards singly, so the point is moot; for "One of Everything!" according to what I've read (and as the name suggests), you only need 1 of each card. Apparently golden/non-golden doesn't matter either - any single copy of any version of a card will be enough. I've added a note to the latter quest info for others who may be wondering. -- Taohinton (talk) 10:17, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

Add Android pack gain

Next to the iPad pack section, there should be a note that you can also get a classic pack by playing a game on an android tablet. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.187.16.63 (talkcontribs) 06:29, 17 December 2014‎

I've added an entry to that effect (and rearranged the page a little better). It would be good to know the title for the page, and the text too ideally, but I can't find that info anywhere. -- Taohinton (talk)

False information

Quote:

"If a player's quest log is already full when first logging in for the day, the player can still get that day's quest by completing two or three quests; upon logging in the next day, the player will be awarded two new daily quests."

This part is incorrect, and cost me a daily quest when I followed its advice. Please change this ASAP, so it doesn't cause more damage. 122.57.17.60 08:09, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Since the original editor obviously believed it to be true, I've temporarily removed the section until I get the chance to test it personally. -- Taohinton (talk) 23:57, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
I tried it and it didn't give me a second one either. I've therefore removed the note permanently. -- Taohinton (talk) 23:22, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
Judging from my experience, there is a one hidden buffer quest slot, which is filled upon reset, if all 3 real quest slots are filled. This hidden buffer position is cleared next time, when there are 2 or more free slots available on reset and two quests granted. Like this (buffer quest is in brackets here): Day 1: 3 (0) quests - do not play - on reset 3 (1)::: Day 2: 3 (1) - complete 2 quests 1 (1) - on reset two quests granted 3 (0). Not sure, if it goes through a day like this: Day 1: 3 (0) quests - do not play - on reset 3 (1)::: Day 2: 3 (1) - complete one quest 2 (1) - on reset one quest granted 3 (1)::: Day 3: 3 (1) - complete 2 quests 1 (1) - on reset two quests granted 3 (0). It need to be tested. But the first scenario works 100%, I tested it many times. UserProfile:Gumblarg 9 September 2016
As explained in the references in the article, the results for this seem to vary, and have all been confirmed as unintended ("bugs"). I've personally had it happen with 1 or 2 quests (for a complete refill), and at other times not work at all. It might vary by account. (For the sake of posterity it should be noted the above discussion is only part of the story; following the Feb 2015 posts I retested and added notes to the page clarifying that this behaviour does sometimes happen, etc.) -- Taohinton (talk) 07:35, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
For the record, as of Patch 6.2.0.15181 this appears to be fixed: "Resolved an issue where players that didn’t cycle quests after a certain period of time then cleared all quests at once could acquire multiple quests in a single day." Of course it might not be fixed, or this might only apply to some such instances; we'll have to see. For now I've amended the section to say it should be fixed. -- Taohinton (talk) 23:31, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

Reset Time

The daily reset time is stated as 1AM Pacific, which is likely true for the North American servers, but the European servers reset at 1AM UTC+2. Not sure which European time zone that is or whether it changes with daylight savings. --197.87.46.212 19:05, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

I was about to agree, and edit the page accordingly, but further investigation shows personal reports of wildly varying times. I've contacted Zeriyah and will hopefully be able to get an answer once and for all. -- Taohinton (talk) 23:43, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
Zeriyah was kind enough to reply, and confirmed that midnight server time is the intended time; PST for Americas, CEST for Europe, and Korea time for Asia. -- Taohinton (talk) 03:23, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Class pairings table

The repetition in the old table was driving me crazy, and it made for bad reading. I wanted an alternative in which the classes are listed in the order they are paired, allowing each description to be given just once, making the table less repetitive and horizontally cramped. There aren't so many classes that they need to be in alphabetical order.

The big problem is that the rowspan attribute does not allow for overlapping rowspans - browsers insert extra blank cells to fill out the span if you try to create a second one that would extend outside of it. So you can't have a nice pretty chain of "Druid (left) overlaps with 'the wild' (right) overlaps with Hunter (left) overlaps with 'Arcane magic and projectiles' (right) overlaps with Mage (left)" and so forth alternating down the table, as I'd envisioned. That's a limitation of HTML itself, unfortunately.

What I added is the next best alternative. Even though it's not alphabetical, people can still easily find a given class by scanning down the left side. The big improvement is there's no repetition of the "connection" and less repetition of class names, making it easier to read the table from top to bottom.

I also rewrote most of the descriptions to add some info and mainly get them into a uniform "descriptive noun" format...except for that pesky Shaman-Warlock thing. - jerodast (talk) 15:34, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

I wasn't bothered by the previous layout, but the new one certainly looks a lot neater. The rewrites are mostly fine, although they have discarded a bit of info in the pursuit of neatness. I corrected one point: druids also use Arcane magic (LegacyMoonfire and LegacyStarfall for starters). -- Taohinton (talk) 16:57, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
Ah good call on the Arcane thing. I always thought that was a massive stretch - Arcane Shot is the ONLY clearly Arcane hunter ability (technically a few others are too, but the lore significance of those is weak), so the only way I could justify leaving it in was the idea that even that slim connection was more than any other class had. Now that you point it out, I don't see any reason we should even list a connection that's blatantly weaker than the same one between a different pair of classes. - jerodast (talk) 17:22, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
I actually tried not to lose any info that was accurate & relevant, especially since the new format leaves plenty of room for longer descriptions, please let me know/add back anything I overlooked! I did drop the "projectiles" Hunter/Mage thing since that just seemed like such a silly reach, but it actually fits well with the "ranged direct damage" archetype so I put it back in, especially with the Arcane thing gone. The fact that rogues and druids both use combo points / similar abilities is...true, but none of the other connections are from such a mechanical, out-of-universe angle, so I tried to get the same point across using more "class conceptual" terms that also speak to the lore. - jerodast (talk) 17:39, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
That's fine, I'd say it's ended up pretty good :) The druid/rogue connection is significantly a WoW thing, so it's something I think the devs will have been very well aware of (several of them at least are known to play WoW, and even come from WoW in the first place, including Brode and Dodds). Lore-wise I think you've done a good job of expressing the connection. -- Taohinton (talk) 18:22, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Best way to maximize gold gain from Quests

Er, this is kind of just a thing that I wanted to add into the section to help people with gold issues, by sharing a gold trick with quests.

But since I really suck at explaining stuff, I am going to give examples of how its done instead.

Scenario A - Day 1: You got a 40 gold quest. Reroll it. Got another 40 gold quest. Log off. Day 2: You got a 60 gold quest. Reroll the 40 gold from yesterday, got another 60 gold. Complete both. =120 Gold

Scenario B - Day 1: You got a 40 gold quest. Reroll it. Got another 40 gold quest. Log off. Day 2: You got a 40 gold quest. Reroll one of the 40 gold quests, you got a 60 gold quest. Complete the 60 gold quest and log off. Day 3: You got a 60 gold quest. Reroll the 40 gold quest that you still haven't gotten rid of yet. Got a 60 gold quest.

Its better to keep your 40 gold quests uncompleted so you can reroll them, there is a chance you get 60 gold or 100 gold quest instead.

New Quest during a game, full slots

Just had an interesting occurrence that I thought might be worth testing/mentioning. I didn't see it on the page but I apologize if it's already there. The quest reset time for me is 3:00 AM local time. I had a quest partially completed (Shaman or Warlock Victory, 1/2) and two other uncompleted quests. I entered a game (using Shaman) at 2:54 AM local time. That game lasted until 3:02 AM local time. Upon my victory, I was given the 40 Gold for completing the quest, and the game returned to the Play menu, where it then displayed a new Daily Quest. I assumed that I had "lost" that quest because I had 3 incomplete quests at the reset time, but apparently if you're in a game during the reset time, and you complete a quest in that game, you can still receive a new quest. I dunno if this is a bug, or if it's so rare that it's not worth mentioning on the page, but I thought it was worth bringing up. 192.204.106.12 08:22, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Incorrect information in Unique quests regarding Golden Portraits

Golden Malfurion Stormrage Win 500 Ranked games with Malfurion Stormrage. Golden hero portrait Golden Rexxar Win 500 Ranked games with Rexxar. Golden hero portrait Golden Jaina Proudmoore Win 500 Ranked games with Jaina Proudmoore. Golden hero portrait Golden Uther Lightbringer Win 500 Ranked games with Uther Lightbringer. Golden hero portrait Golden Anduin Wrynn Win 500 Ranked games with Anduin Wrynn. Golden hero portrait Golden Valeera Sanguinar Win 500 Ranked games with Valeera Sanguinar. Golden hero portrait Golden Thrall Win 500 Ranked games with Thrall. Golden hero portrait Golden Gul'dan Win 500 Ranked games with Gul'dan. Golden hero portrait Golden Garrosh Hellscream Win 500 Ranked games with Garrosh Hellscream. Golden hero portrait

These quests all imply that you need to win 500 ranked games with the respective hero to obtain the golden portrait with them, which is false. You just need to be playing that class. For example, I can get golden Jaina by playing as Khadgar or Medivh. Therefore I propose the wording to be changed to "win 500 ranked games with (class)" instead of "win 500 ranked games with (hero)" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.160.236.46 (talkcontribs) 07:22, 25 July 2016‎

Good point! The wording is however the official text from in-game, so rather than change it I've added a note to each. I've added the note for all of them, even those classes which don't currently have alternate heroes, because we don't want to have to update this page each time a new hero is added. -- Taohinton (talk) 18:36, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Unofficial, but someone said on reddit that the daily limit is 5: https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/4t2o91/the_playafriend_quest_does_have_a_cap/ Aegonostic (talk) 14:56, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner - this is good info, and while not bullet-proof is reasonable enough for use here. I've simplified the section since the other info was only really important before we knew what the limit was, and added the links as refs. -- Taohinton (talk) 07:36, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

Video infobox

I'm not sure I dig the infobox div for the video at the top of this article. It does help it to not get confused with the rest of the lead section text, but it also feels like it highlights it quite a lot. The videos were installed by Curse themselves, and aren't actual wiki material; I've never been sure how well they really fit into the articles, especially in pride of place at the top of the page. A compromise might be the border without the shadow, but I don't know enough about the code to make that change. -- Taohinton (talk) 20:39, 3 August 2016 (UTC)

Hm, I can see your point. The box really is sort of dark on its edges, it catches the eye, that's for sure. I don't know how to reduce the shading of the box though. Aegonostic (talk) 23:34, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
I figured out where I was going wrong trying to set the style, and removed the shadow. I think I still prefer it below the text than right at the top, though. That's probably a good place for those who want watch it, without making it the primary focus. -- Taohinton (talk) 00:29, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Distribution of Play a Friend quests may have been deactivated with KAR update

Ppl may still have it, though distribution may have been deactivated. It's a gut feeling. Just something to be weary about and look out for in forums, etc. Unless I'm proven wrong! Then this section falls into irrelevancy. Aegonostic (talk) 08:03, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Daily Quest probabilities in table format?

I have been gathering data on quest probabilities. I've only collected data on ~90 login quests and ~30 re-roll quests (this is beginning from the Play a Friend quest update patch). Once I obtain sufficiently more data (maybe 1.5x or 2x more data), I could post the data into the quest table in this article. I would like to hear some feedback on whether or not I should proceed, since this data is entirely my own doing, and empirical. Aegonostic (talk) 21:12, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

Example of how Quest Probabilities table would look like (07/12/16 - 10/03/16):

This seems like a fine addition, with the one precaution that a sufficiently large sample is used: as I'm sure you know, it's easy to get inaccurate statistics with smaller samples! Continuing to record your quests and expand the sample size might be a good safeguard against initial inaccuracies. You might also want to check around for similar stats on reddit, etc, and compare numbers (or even consider combining data if similar enough). Other than that, sounds good! -- Taohinton (talk) 23:25, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
The only other data set I found was from ~Aug/September 2015 - December 2015, in the TGT era right after Tavern Brawl quest came out. ;) (Data was very similar to current data probabilities!)
I am planning to release this data into the main article after sufficient (2x more) data has been gathered. I'm not sure the Play a Friend probability I personally observe on my account is an outlier or not, because others' observations experience slightly higher Play a Friend gather rates. Aegonostic (talk) 21:11, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

"Strategy" section needing rewrite and shortening

The current "Strategy" section on how to maximize gold is now outdated. Also, it is very very wordy. I vote for overhauling and shortening the section. Aegonostic (talk) 16:58, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

In re-reviewing the section, I think it's fine the way it is now. Though I disapprove of the length of the section, it really tends to overcomplicate things. Aegonostic (talk) 16:18, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
I might be inclined to sandbox the "Strategy" section, making it anew. Also, I'm considering making a "Quest statistics" article, analogous to the article Card pack statistics. Aegonostic (talk) 05:11, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

How to organize quest lists

The expression "Legendary Quest" is an official one, and thus it should be used only for quests that can be completed just once and that appear on the quest log. Most of the quests listed under the sub-lists General, Missions and Promotional don't fit the Legendary Quest definition.

That was the reason why in the past the Quest page was organized differently: daily (and later weekly) quests were opposed to "Unique quests" (that, differently from the previous, were not repeatable); then, unique quests were divided in two groups, wether or not they were always active (they were called "General" if I remember well) or were obtainable only for a short period of time ("Temporary quests", which were the vast majority). There was not the clear information on how these quest were granted (i.e., if they were Legendary or not), but that information (which can be added) is much less useful than knowing if the quest is still available or not.

Given that, I think that this wiki's Quest pages should be re-organized with the old system: Daily&Weekly vs Unique, and Unique divided into always-active (using the old "General" tag or a better one) and Temporary; then, within the list of temporary quests, we can state which ones were Legendary (i.e., showed up in the quest log, taking space - before the 4th slot was introduced - and being re-rollable - after the feature was added), hidden or whatsoever.

I already planned to re-organize the structure of quest pages. There will be a list of rewards combined from all sources
quests, Rewards Tracks, others,... and so on. The data directly from game is already there, and I could've just imported them. The sole reason I cannot do that right now is because it really really takes a long time to clean up the pages. For now, I want to keep our quest pages like in this state for the sake of keeping history. I will give the instructions soon. Use25 (talk) 12:50, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
I took care for years of the lists of temporary quests, taking screenshots whenever a new temporary quest popped out in-game and/or was announced in the official Blizzard News, and then adding it to the the list (using the same format). I'm still doing that, but updates are (and were) written once in a while (when I find the time). I will try to modify one of the "new" quest lists of the past years if I find the time
since those pages mostly list only old unique quests that were available only for a short period of time, they should stay there only for historical reasons, and should be very fast to modify/re-organize/update.

I never write content about daily&weekly quests (including symmetries/similarities or strategies), and I don't think I'll have the time to do it in the near future. However, having done it for years, I can still try to contribute to temporary quest lists, which include events like Fire Festival and login rewards: I don't have a strong position about past Reward Tracks, i.e. if they should have their own pages/lists of if they should be integrated within the tenmporary quest pages (maybe to be renamed as rewards on the tracks are not quests, or should they be treated the same, since some of them - like the free legendary card at level 1 - replaced previous login rewards or temporary quests?). On the other hand, I think achievements should not be there, since they are always active (even if without the XP rewards).
