Strategy
With good stats for its cost and a special effect highly relevant to a mage, the Sorcerer's Apprentice makes for a great addition to a deck. It is most commonly seen in tempo-focused decks which seize board control in the early game, not allowing the opponent to recover.
Notably it reduces the mana cost of both Arcane Missiles and Mirror Image to 0, and Frostbolt and Flamecannon to 1, allowing a mage to control the board and still have mana left to play minions.
This card's ability makes it a soft taunt in most situations, making it a good idea to protect it with a Taunt, as most opponent players will try to remove it at the earliest opportunity. However, in the late game it is generally less valuable and therefore less of a target, due to the larger pool of available mana and usually smaller hand size.
Trivia
"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is a poem by Goethe written in 1797. It is perhaps best known for its interpretation in the 1940 Disney film Fantasia, featuring Mickey Mouse.
The poem begins as an old sorcerer departs his workshop, leaving his apprentice with chores to perform. Tired of fetching water by pail, the apprentice enchants a broom to do the work for him – using magic in which he is not yet fully trained. The floor is soon awash with water, and the apprentice realizes that he cannot stop the broom because he does not know how.
The apprentice splits the broom in two with an axe, but each of the pieces becomes a whole new broom and takes up a pail and continues fetching water, now at twice the speed. When all seems lost, the old sorcerer returns, quickly breaks the spell and saves the day. The poem finishes with the old sorcerer's statement that powerful spirits should only be called by the master himself.
Speculation
This card is often considered to depict Kinndy Sparkshine, an apprentice of Jaina Proudmoore who was killed in the bombing of Theramore. However, Kinndy is described as having bright pink hair, bound up in ponytails, as opposed to this gnome's red, braided hair.
