Lore[edit | edit source]

"Shadowmourne; a newly forged weapon already steeped in this world's history, reborn into an unrivaled destiny. With this weapon you bear a solemn responsibility, and the time to carry out that charge is at hand."
Darion Mograine

Shadowmourne is a legendary 2-handed axe available exclusively to death knights, paladins, and warriors. It is rewarded at the end of a long quest chain taking place primarily inside the Icecrown Citadel raid.

The massive axe is created on the behest of Darion Mograine to challenge the Lich King's own blade, Frostmourne. First, players are tasked with retrieving saronite and acidic blood from the Lich King's minions in the Citadel, as well as sent to the Frostmourne Cavern to retrieve Light's Vengeance, the hammer that Arthas Menethil wielded in life, to serve as the foundation of the weapon. The resulting weapon, Shadow's Edge, must then be fed with the souls of 50 of the Lich King's servants in Icecrown Citadel before being infused with the powers of blood, frost, and the unholy. The wielder of Shadow's Edge is then tasked with retrieving Shadowfrost Shards, splinters that were scattered across the citadel when Arthas shattered the Frozen Throne, before Darion finally combines the different materials into Shadowmourne. Finally, Darion tasks the player, with Shadowmourne in hand, to end the reign of the Lich King.
