What I've done so far, as of the end of August 2022.
Old Battlegrounds + Constructed cards now separated[]
Patch 24.2.0.148211 reveals the mindset change of Blizzard developers when it comes to managing Battlegrounds minion cards. Specifically, all old Battlegrounds cards which are also Constructed cards received a separated version of itself, but only to appear in Battlegrounds instead.
Take example for Battlegrounds/Silverback Patriarch. It's techincally a different card from Silverback Patriarch, since they have different dbfId
. It seems that in this patch, they want to apply such design to all existing Bg/Constructed cards for consistency, for example Battlegrounds/Alleycat. Alleycat is no longer both a Constructed and Battlegrounds card.
As a result, I have personally reworked all Battlegrounds subpages, they will now be treated as storing pages for corresponding cards now instead of using query. I acknowledged that I deleted quite a lot of existing information, but they are also part of my decisions which will be explained below. About Patch changes, I'm planning to make subsections to include changes of their original versions while they were still used as Battlegrounds cards, but only changes from the day Battlegrounds released to pre Patch 24.2.0 will be included.
Importing old Patch changes[]
I have finally found a solution to inconsistent Patch changes section. Sections that don't use Template:Card article patch changes template are containing actually paragraphs, not data, and I wish to use this solution to convert them into data, thanks to the consistent pattern edits we have made before.
While this solution is only temporary, it will at least allow me to rework the articles for Project 13 and focus on other important projects, before I can go back to importing Card changes data properly, which requires lots of time and patience.
Reworking Strategy section[]
This is actually one of my desires for a very long time, perhaps ever since United in Stormwind released. The biggest problem with this section is that it was completely free of any editing policy, which allowed all contributors to write whatever they want. Moreover, nowadays:
- Strategy content is getting more and more specific. Most contributors write during the time period when they are playing. Such content is so easily outdated, especially now that Blizzard frequently releases balance changes.
- Contributors usually have mindset "More words, more wisdom". We all know that we want to play the game and get quick tips, not to read an essay of unnecessary words. The main point of Strategy section is to inform the readers interesting scenarios they can take advantage of the card, or at least ways to use the card effectively.
- Yet instead, the section is flooded with evaluating sentences (This card is very powerful)
- A lot of sections redescribe the most obvious functionalities of the card (This card is a 4/4 that basically deals 3 damage for instance).
- As a wiki contributor, we want to remain neutral to any kind of content, any party as much as possible.
- There are some Strategy sections that advise the player to use other cards instead because this card is clearly powercreeped, which doesn't meet the purpose of a wiki.
There are a lot of problems with Strategy section, and all of them are the obstacles of our articles. When Project 13 is nearly completed, I will run a bot to terminate all Strategy content of all cards, except Boss cards. All Card templates will also no longer support the Strategy section.
New section: Tips[]
After Project 13 is fully completed, I will initiate a new section to card articles, called Tips.
- This section will be divided into 2 smaller sections: Tips when using this card, and Tips when against this card.
- Both of them will be a list of short, but useful tips readers can use to take advantage of the card's strong points or weak points of the card. They can also be combinations or combos.
- This section will try to avoid flooding with paragraphs, analyzing, evaluating, comparing cards, and so on. There will be an editing policy for this section which remind the contributors to add tips and only tips.
Project 13 progress[]
Project 13 is making progress now, as I am working on the general layout in Template:Card template v2. The layout will function a bit differently than Template:Card template.
You can also check out my sandboxes to see how the new template will look like and how much I've done so far: User:Use25/template1, User:Use25/template2. I will explain the details of the template in a documentation after I've finished the project.
Now that over half of Project 13's necessities have been resolved, I want to fully focus on finishing this project first. Any other plan will have to be postponed for a while (except importing new client data, of course).
Side projects that require assistances[]
Rewards[]
I have reworked the Template:CustomReward table a bit. To be exact, I've created keys to store the cost value of each currency (Runestone, Gold, US dollar, etc...). However, as you can see, I want to focus on finishing Project 13, and this kind of information requires constant updates every week. Luckily, I have already prepared a detailed documentation, should you wonder how you can edit on your own.
I'll need some people who can put new rewards into this table every time we get a new bundle in Shop, or promotion that rewards for free. Rewards from all modes would be appreciated.
Analyzing the Battlegrounds' Quest and Reward tags[]
Right now, I don't have time to maintain the Battlegrounds Quest and Reward content, nor to make them readable to regular readers. To accomplish such things, I need to analyze some weird tags of these cards. For example Battlegrounds/Unlikely Duo, it has numeric tags, but it's possible that other Quest cards have the same tag, but maybe different value.
I'll need someone to figure out how Quests and Rewards really work: how the dynamic numbers are defined, and what the tags' purposes are.
Patch articles[]
Thanks to User:VGhost01 for helping me with creating Category:Patches articles and Category:Patch templates every time we get a new client update. I wish to keep up with this work regularly.
Full artworks[]
As usual, any time an artist releases the full artwork of a card, upload to the wiki and use {{Card artwork}} to include source. You may also need to clear cache of the corresponding card articles, fill in customFullArt
with filename of the artwork (without File:, but with postfix .png or .jpg or similar).
"New" Battlegrounds cards missing Related card ids[]
As I mentioned above, all Bg/Constructed cards now have a separated version to only be used in Battlegrounds. Because of that, they also have different dbfIds and old custom data are not relevant anymore. For example, I would want to include the dbfId of Battlegrounds/Tabbycat in customRelatedCardDbfIds
of Battlegrounds/Alleycat.
