He and Mountain Giant don't get along.
Clockwork Giant is an epic neutral minion card, from the Goblins vs Gnomes set.
How to get
Clockwork Giant can be obtained through Goblins vs Gnomes card packs, or through crafting.
Card | Crafting cost | Disenchanting |
---|---|---|
Clockwork Giant | 400 | 100 |
Golden Clockwork Giant | 1600 | 400 |
Notes
- Example: If your opponent has 10 cards in their hand your Clockwork Giant costs 12-10 = 2 mana, and if your opponent has 8 cards it costs 4 mana. If your opponent's hand is empty your Clockwork Giant costs 12 mana, and thus it cannot be played without other cost-modifying effects.
- The mana cost of this card cannot be reduced below 0. However, further cost-reductions can help in countering cost-increasing effects like Freezing Trap.
- This card has an in-hand effect: it modifies its own mana cost only while in the player's hand, and not while the card is anywhere else.
Strategy
Clockwork Giant is a useful card in any match-up against players with large numbers of cards in their hands, such as control decks. When the opponent has only a few cards, the Giant will be a fairly reasonable price, but when the opponent has a large hand it becomes a very efficient (and powerful) option.
If the opponent has 5 cards in their hand, the Giant will be an 8/8 for 7 mana, making it roughly efficient. Above 7 cards the Giant becomes very efficient, potentially providing an 8/8 for just 2 mana.
Could be used in a deck with cards that give draws for your opponent like Naturalize, Coldlight Oracle, King Mukla or Dancing Swords. By increasing the opponent's hand size, the player can directly reduce the cost of their own Clockwork Giant.
As a high-cost card, this has good synergy with Holy Wrath, potentially dealing 12 damage for just 5 mana.
Trivia
- Clockwork Giant is the fourth Giant to be added to Hearthstone, and the first to be added in an expansion. All giants are 8/8 epic neutral minion cards, featuring a theme of their mana cost being reduced by a specific game factor. The mirror of the Mountain Giant, Clockwork Giant is the first Giant to have its cost altered by a factor related specifically to the opponent.
- The flavor text, "He and Mountain Giant don't get along." may be a direct reference to the fact that an opponent with Mountain Giant in hand will actively hold cards to make it have a cheaper mana cost, which also lowers your Clockwork Giant mana cost.
